The Atlin Pioneer Cemetery

Dateline: October 22, 2024.

    Mary Turner's mother, Mary E. Dore, was born in Harmony, Maine. She was married to William A. Treat, in Brewer, Maine. In 1854 they emigrated to California. About a year later her husband died. In April 19, 1857, she got married again, to Rev. George B. Taylor, an Episcopalian minister of San Francisco. They had two children. ("History of the Dore Family", by Walter Harrington Dore, 1908)

September 14, 1862: Mary A. Taylor, the second of Mary and George's children, was born in San Francisco.

After completing grammar and high schools in San Francisco, Mary finished her education at the University of California.

March 1, 1885: Married dentist Dr. William A. Turner in San Francisco.

November 20, 1898: The San Francisco Call published a lengthy illustrated article about Mary's Northern adventures, most of which was written by Mary - read it here.

March 3, 1899: The Victoria Daily Globe published a fairly lengthy article about "Doc" and Mrs. Turner - read it here.

April 5, 1899: Mary A. Turner died.
"Another sad event was the death of Mrs. Turner, wife of Dr. Turner, dentist. The lady was taken sick with pneumonia between Log Cabin and here. She arrived here on the 4th and expired on the 5th. It is said Mrs. Turner was the first white woman to visit Atlin, having come here with her husband last August and staked a claim on Pine near Discovery. Among those who knew her she was very highly respected." (The Atlin Claim, April 29, 1899)

1928: Dr. William Arthur Turner died, and was buried at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, California.
