Artful Chemistry
The beautiful blue-green colour of Emerald Lake is created by sunlight refelecting off a white layer of "marl" on the lake bed.
Marl is a white calcium carbonate clay that forms in the water and then settles, often unevenly, onto the lake bottom. It forms when enough carbonate from dissolving limestone racts with calcium in the water.

May is the month of the greatest changes in the appearance of the lake. Exactly when the ice disappears to reveal the colours of the water varies from year to year, but can generally be described as mid May.
