		Yukon Recipients of Polar Medals Yukon Recipients of Honours, Decorations, & Medals Dateline: February 3, 2023 The Polar Medal recognizes individuals who have provided outstanding service in support of scientific research and/or polar exploration, or whose achievements contribute to preserving northern culture and heritage, or to securing Canada's northern sovereignty. Marilyn Jensen On December 8, 2016, Marilyn Jensen received a Polar Medal today from Governor-General David Johnston in Edmonton. The medal, one of six awarded this year, is in honour of Jensen's efforts to foster healing and reclaim Tlingit culture and values within the community of the Carcross-Tagish First Nation. Jensen is the founder and group leader of the Dakhkeacute; Khwéan Dancers. As the founder and group leader of the dancers, Jensen has made significant contributions to cultural revitalization through the traditional art forms of song, drumming, dance and storytelling. She is also an instructor in the First Nations Governance and Public Administration program and History of Yukon First Nations and Self-Government course at Yukon College. Jensen's classes are enriched by the cultural revitalization work she does. She provides pathways to foster healing and reclaim Tlingit culture and values within the community of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation.
