The new Government hospital which has been under way at this place for several months past is now practically completed and, when the furniture is installed, will be ready to occupy.
The new hospital is a credit to the Yukon government, an asset to Whitehorse, anda monument to the architectural and mechanical skill of Superintendent W. H. Simpson and those in his employ. The workmanship from basement to dome is thorough in detail and modern_in every respect. The plans as set forth in this paper shortly after work was started on the foundation, have been carried out and the building, as it will be turned over to the government, could not be improved upon for the money expended.
Only a portion of the concrete floor in the basement will be left unfinished and this the Yukon council will provide for at its next regular meeting early
the coming year. The heating plant and water service are both installed, the latter a 1000 gallon tank operated by air pressure sufficient to give a strong flow of water in any part of the building and amply sufficient for use in case of fire.
In addition to the two big wards, each accommodating eight patients, there are five private wards, an operating room, private rooms for the nurses, doctor's office and medicine room, besides the dining room, kitchen, pantry and several clothes closets, linen rooms and other accessories that go to make a well-appointed, up-to-date and modern building. The capacity of the hospital, without crowding, is twenty one patients which, in case of mining operations being carried on in this locality as
extensively as indications are that will be in the near future, will not prove too much.
Now that the hospital building is completed, efforts will be made, with
assistance from the government, to have it furnished and ready for occupancy at an early date and to help in this matter it is proposed to dedicate the building by holding a grand New Year’s ball there on the night of December 31.
Those of our citizens who have not visited the new hospital should show
their civic pride by doing so. See it and you will say with this paper that it is, for the money expended, the banner public building in the territory.
