Work is now under way which will terminate in the completion of a new
government hospital at this place, the site being about one hundred yards south of the residence of Isaac Taylor and east of the residence of R. C. Miller. Excavating for the basement was started on Monday of this week under the direction of Superintendent W. H.
Simpson who will have charge for the government of all departments of the work from the excavating to the finish touches.
The main building will be 30 by 60 feet, two stories, with a ward 24 by 38, also two stories. There will be an operating room 20 by 20 and one story. It is intended that accomodations for 20 patients will be provided without crowding, but more can be accommodated if necessity requires. The basement now being excavated will be the same in dimension as the main portion of the building, 30 by 60. There will be a well in the basement where the heating plant will also be located.
Several carloads of lumber for the building arrived on Monday's train. It is from Vancouver and of the quality for which lower British Columbia and Puget Sound are famed, not only all over the American continent, but wherever good lumber is used throughout the world.
Mr. Simpson estimates that the hospital will be completed and ready to occupy in about four months from date which will be this time in October and before the advent of severe weather. The labor will be performed by local workmen as far, as possible. The amount which the Yukon government appropriated for the building is $18,000.
