Edward J. Thain, a prominent citizen of Atlin, died at that place recently after an illness of only a few hours. Concerning the deceased the Atlin Claim says:
Edward James Thain was born in St-Solus, N. B., in 1847. In the latter 50's his father, who owned and was master of a sailing vessel, brought the family round the Horn to San Francisco and later to Victoria. In Victoria the deceased finished his schooling and then entered mercantile work and afterwards, becoming sickly, engaged in the
sheep ranching industry in California until the middle 70's, when he returned to British Columbia. In the latter 70's he had charge of the commissary department on one of the preliminary survey parties of the C. P. Railway. In 1885 he became chief clerk in the attorney geveral's department at Victoria, which position he retained until the latter 90's
E. J. Thain, S. M., arrived in Atlin on March 22nd, 1899, and for a year
or so engaged in business, after which be mined on Boulder creek for some time. In 1901 he was appointed mining recorder for the district of Atlin, and has also sincen then carried on the duties of registrar of supreme court of B. C., registrar Atlin County Court, Registrar births, deaths and marriages, clerk of the peace, collector of voters for Atlin electoral district, coroner for Atlin district, magistrate under the small debts act for Atlin county, and also deputy mining recorder for Teslin district.
