The Whitehorse Pioneer Cemetery

The Whitehorse Star (Whitehorse, Yukon) - Friday, May 28, 1937

    The death occurred in the Whitehorse General Hospital on Saturday, May 22, of Mrs. Robert Earl, aged 68, after a lengthy illness.

    One of the oldest pioneer women in the district, Mrs. Earl arrived in Whitehorse in June 1900 and was a passenger on one of the first trains to arrive here.

    Funeral services were held from Christ Church on Monday afternoon, Rev. G. Cross officiating. The following old-timers acted as pall bearers: F. E. Harbottle, W. H. Simpson, J. Sewell and O. Erickson. Interment was in the Whitehorse Cemetery.

    The death of Mrs. Earl marks the passing of a gallant soul whose intrepid spirit characterized the old-time pioneers of the North.

    On September 27, 1921, Whitehorse pioneers Robert Earle and Mrs. Winnifred Sarp were quietly married at the bride's home, with only a few friends present. The only other mention of her in The Star was in 1913 when wood to the value of four dollars was stolen from Mrs. Joseph Sarp by Stanley Cain. She appears to have moved up from California.

    Her husband, Robert Earle, died 8 months before her, on September 13, 1936. Although Mrs. Earle would likely have been buried beside her husband, who is in Plot N-116, the dates for the Earle (no first name) in N-117 don't match.
