Skagway Commercial Club promotion, 1910

A Guide to Modern Skagway, Alaska

Dateline: December 8, 2023.

In January 1910, an association of Skagway businesspeople agreed to publish a promotional booklet about the Skagway area. A scan of the entire 54-page brochure (3.4 MB) can be seen here.

The Daily Alaskan, Skagway, Alaska, Tuesday, January 11, 1910.

Although the weather was very disagreeable there was a well attended meeting of the Commercial Club last night, twenty members being present and taking an active part in the discussion.

Secretary Miller read a booklet which he had prepared advertising Skagway as a summer tourist resort and describing the numerous side trips to Dyea, Denver Glacier, Burro Creek, Smuggler's Cove, Kern Kastle, over the old White Pass trail and to Atlin and Whitehorse. The opportunities for hunting, fishing and mountain climbing were also touched upon. The booklet is illustrated with many handsome photographs and the descriptive matter is most interestingly and entertaingly prepared.

By unanimous vote the booklet was accepted by the club and after a general discussion a motion was unanimously passed referring the question of having the booklet printed to the printing and advertising committee. This committee will at once call for bids and report to ิthe club.

The cost of printing 10,000 handhandsome copies of the booklet for distribution will be approximately $600. As the Commercial club at the present time has but $380 in its strong box the remainder of the amount must be raised by public subscription.

At the meeting last night $195 was subscribed and it is anticipated that the rest of the amount can be easily raised.

The booklet will be a work of art when printed and it is bound to attract tourists to Skagway. It will remove much mis-information regarding Alaska in general and Skagway in particular and no better means of advertising the town could be devised.

The question of advertising Skagway as the gateway to the Iditarod diggings will be settled at the next meeting.

Mrs. H. S. Pullen and Tony Stanich were admitted to membership of the club last night.
