This has been a busy summer for the territorial engineering staff, with an impressive list of new buildings, roadwork and bridges under construction at a number of locations in the territory.
Yukon Forestry Division got the lion's share of new construction projects. Two camp grounds are being built at Marsh Lake, near the site of a former Army camp. Territorial engineer Grant Starr said two campsites were planned because so many local people as well as visitors stop at Marsh Lake to camp out.
Forestry patrol cabins will be built at Frances Lake on the Ross River-Watson Lake Road and on the Flat Creek road. To be usedduring summer months, these 10x30 foot furnished trailers were furnished by Alberta Trailer Sales.
Woolley Construction were awarded a contract to build a fire stores building at Watson Lake. Bids will be called for a look-out tower on the Frances Lake road, near Tom creek in the Watson Lake area, Mr. Starr said. Also at Watson Lake, Territorial Construction won the contract to renovate an office for the forestry warden and part time mining recorder. The building was formerly used as a residence.
NEW LOOKOUT
At Haines Junction, Humphrey Construction crews are building offices for forestry personnel and also a fire stores building. On Haeckel Hill, north of Whitehorse, Territorial Construction crews are building a tower and living quarters for forestry personnel.
Offices and radio buildings are going up for forestry personnel at Carmacks and Beaver Creek. Territorial Construction have the Carmacks contract, while Woolley Construction are doing the work at Beaver Creek. Dawson contractor Jack Olsen is working on forestry buildings there, including improvements to the garage and warden's residence,
The new forestry administation building at Camp Takhini is nearing completion. Framing has been finished, with plumbing and wiring partially completed. Mr. Starr said the project is to be finished in September.
NEW SCHOOLS
Scheduled for this year's fall school term are schools at Beaver Creek and Destruction Bay. A new school for Watson Lake is scheduled for completion later in the season, Mr. Starr stated.
Territorial engineers are lining up road projects at several points with streets being opened at Watson Lake, Porter Creek and Canyon Crescent, the new subdivision at Mile 912.
Under territorial supervision, four bridges will be built this year on the Canol road, at mileposts 91, 100, 111 and 105. Near Ross River, the foot bridge over the Pelly River has been repaired with new cables.
ROAD WORK
Besides all this new construction, renovation and repair work, territorial engineers this summer planned a considerable amount of road work. Main target was the Stewart Crossing-Dawson road, where contracts were let to Maclsaac Construction, Strachan Construction and Proctor Construction for various surfacing projects.
Dawsonite Dick Gillespie has now completed a grading contract on 15 miles of the Sixty Mile road. On the Whitehorse-Keno road surfacing and grading contracts were let for various sections to General Enterprises, MacIsaac Construction and Strachan Construction.
