    The Solomon Islands is a chain which lies east of New Guinea in the southwestern Pacific Ocean and extends for nine hundred miles. The islands were discovered by the Spanish explorer Alvaro De Mendana de Neyra [1568] who, in anticipation of natural riches, named them lslas de Solomon for the wealthy Biblical king. Though the Solomons did not live up to the expectations of their first explorer, they are indeed rich in beauty and simplicity. Thatch-roofed huts are the characteristic dwelling.
