With this issue The Star resumes publication after a suspension of several months. The cause of suspension is generally attributed to the lack of stability in the then publisher. Be this as it may it is obvious to any man of experience that for some time the paper was not run upon a paying basis. In the first place the paper was too large for the constituency it purported to serve. In the second place the prices charged for advertising and job printing were altogether too low as compared with general prices prevailing in this part of the Yukon Territory.
Our first step was the making of a careful survey of the field. The actual cost of producing a four page paper of four columns each was ascertained and even this was found to be a fairly heavy charge upon the advertisers. A statement in detail was prepared and subinitted to the businessmen of the town and each willingly agreed to assume his or her fair proportion of the advertising responsibility. With this definite understanding established between the publisher and the advertisers the permanency of The Star is assured.
From the many expressions of goodwill extended we feel sure that our readers will appreciate the efforts of the publisher and those upon whom the major portion of the burden must rest and will make their contribution by having their names placed upon our list of subscribers without unnecessary delay.
The task is by no means as small as the size of the paper might indicate, but the disposition on the part of the residents of the town to assist in every way possible will lighten the burden and add to the pleasure of the undertaking. In every sense of the word The Star is to be a community paper.
