Highlights of History from The Whitehorse Star

Miles Canyon on the Yukon River

Dateline: December 23, 2025.

The Whitehorse Star (Whitehorse, Yukon) - Friday, June 18, 1937

Headline: Beautiful Miles Canyon Drive Open To Local residents, 1937

Road repairs on the Canyon Scenic Road are now being completed by the government road crew and it is expected that this beautiful drive will again be open for traffic by the weekend.

On account of the nature of the road and the fact that is is not possible at the present time owing to limited funds available, to make safe turn-outs, the road has been designated as a one-way road only and can only be used by light vehicles weighing not over two tons gross.

The rules governing the traffic on this road provide that all traffic shall move from North to South. In other words, sight-seeing parties leaving will go South via the Rapids and the Canyon Road and return to Whitehorse via the upper road and the Airfield.

With the large number of tourists due to visit Whitehorse this summer, it is really necessary that the Canyon Road should be opened to traffic as the Rapids and the Canyon are our outstanding scenic attractions and it is practically impossible to take care of our tourists properly unless they can visit these spots in comfort.
