That a government road will connect the outlying mining districts with Whitehorse within a few months is a foregone conclusion.
The above statement is based on interviews held by a Star representative this morning with Territorial Engineer W. Thibaudeau and Yukon Councillor Robert Lowe.
Mr. Thibaudeau returned yesterday from a fourteen days' trip through the mining fields, during which time he visited Ruby, Bullion, Fourth of July and many other
creeks, covering on his journey and in the short space of time consumed, upward of 400 miles, and he reports that in all Yukon's broad expanse there is not a country which can be so easily and cheaply supplied with a good thoroughfare as that lately traversed by him. The fact that the intrepid pathfinder made the long trip he did in such a short space of time is conclusive proof that the country is by no means a hard one in which to travel. He made the trip partly in a light wagon, partly on horseback and partly on foot.
His report of what he saw will be made to Commissioner Congdon at the earliest possible date and Mr. Thibaudeau does not hesitate to state that his report will be most favorable.
In addition to looking up the feasibility of constructing a road to the creeks, Mr. Thibaudeau went farther and thoroughly convinced himself that there is something which justifies such expenditure. He convinced himself from personal observation of the creeks, from gold he saw taken out of the ground, and by conversation with owners and operators on the various creeks that as a heavy gold producer the future of the district is assured, and that it is a camp the government will do well to foster and aid in its development.
Mr. Thibaudeau inspected the bridge over Canyon river, lately completed by Gideon, McGee & Skelley, and pronounces it a splendid structure.
The territorial engineer will leave for Dawson on the first through steamer.
Councillor Robert Lowe was seen regarding the likelihood of the Yukon government constructing the road and he stated that there is not the shadow of a doubt but that the appropriation sought, $35,000, will be granted at the next meeting of the council, which will be held next month, by which time Inspectors Burwash and Reid will have reported on the district and gold will be coming out in large quantities.
Verily, the prospects of Whitehorse were never so brilliant as at present.
