At a very moving ceremony September 8, Mrs. Sarah Turnquist, wife of Emil Turnquist, was laid to rest in Atlin. The service was conducted by the Rev. A. L. Privett, S.Th in St. Martin’s Church. Many of the oldtimers who knew the Turnquists were present at the funeral. Mrs. Turnquist leaves her husband, and son Jack. The pallbearers were Melvin Beckman, Oscar Carlson, Paul Lemieux, Dick Craft, and Archie Bruce. They were accompanied by a number of friends from Whitehorse.
It was recalled that Mrs. Turnquist came into Atlin to assist at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Hospital as a nurse. There she met her future husband, Emil who came in as a patient. May 14, 1918 they were married by Mr. Paxton the Marriage Registrar. The couple then lived up on Ruby Creek for 19 years. In 1944 they went to live in Whitehorse. Mr. Turnquist tells how her father was one of the men who piloted boats and barges through the Whitehorse Rapids.
There were many beautiful wreaths on the grave, and the hymns at the service were "Abide with me," "Unto the Hills," and "Rock of Ages."
Mrs. Turnquist is survived by her husband Emil and by her son Jack. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. F.O. Hodgson and Mrs. Bert Hodgson, both of Vancouver, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. S.C. Mite of Crescent Beach, B.C.
