Yukon friends were saddened, Tuesday, to learn of the death at Whitehorse General Hospital, of Ross Peebler, a long-time resident of the ter- ritory and Atlin, B.C, He was 88 years old.
Born in Portland, Oregon, Mr. Peebler first came north as a boy with his uncle, but returned to his home in the States. In 1912 or '13 he came north to stay and for years worked in the Carcross and Teslin areas, trapping and running the mail routes with dogteams into the Wheaton county.
For a time, he worked on the construction of the original dam in the Yukon River near Marsh Lake, but in 1920 he moved to Atlin where he was employed by merchant Louis Schultz.
In 1936 Mr. Peebler opened his own store and restaurant at Atlin and is best remembered by his many friends as a general merchant.
He retired in 1960 to carry on with mining and other interests.
He came to Whitehorse to visit friends three years ago but poor health forced him into lengthy stays at the General Hospital. During the latter part of his life, he lived at the Senior Citizens Home here.
Mr. Peebler was not married, but is survived by an older brother in Portland.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Atlin at the Anglican Church. The Rev. Dr. Harold Marston will officiate and members of the Masonic Lodge, to which Mr. Peebler belonged for 50 years, will be pallbearers. Interment will be made at the Atlin Cemetery.
