Another old-timer of the Yukon passed on to his great adventure in the person of Asa Officer, 67. Deceased had been indisposed for several days and on February 26 passed away at Skagway after a severe heart attack.
Asa Officer was born in Dayville, Oregon, in the year 1868. Coming to
the Yukon in 1897, he prospected all through this territory, Alaska and British Columbia and was well known in the early days in Atlin, Tanana, Iditarod and Dawson. He mined at
Livingstone Creek for several years, being one of the first in that district. Deceased was an American citizen and at the start of the World War volunteered in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, leaving for overseas and seeing service with a Canadian contingent.
Always a wanderer and eagerly seeking adventure, Officer was at all times looking for new fields to explore. Of a kindly disposition and generous nature, many were the friends and few the enemies engendered to him in the course of his lifetime. He will be missed by many old-timers throughout the North and many will mourn the passing of a gallant spirit.
Funeral services were held in Skagway at the Morgue Saturday, March 2nd, after which the body was interred in the Skagway Cemetery. Six Skagway friends acted as pall-bearers and the deceased was honored with several volleys by a firing squad composed of six veterans.
Left to mourn his loss are two sons, three brothers and four sisters; and
a host of friends and acquaintances throughout the North.
