A fierce fire completely gutted the cabin occupied by Hector (Sandy) Grant at 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning and trapped the oldtimer inside.
The cause of the fire has not been determined as yet but friends say Sandy attended a hockey game Saturday evening and returned home around midnight. The fire was seen by a passerby, who turned in the alarm. When firemen arrived they found Sandy slumped by the door as he had attempted to leave the building. Sandy was born in Wales, he was a veteran of the British Navy and had fought in the South Africa War. He had resided in the Yukon for 35 years where he had been employed by the BYN and for the past 8 years for the Department of Public Works. He leaves one brother in Whitehorse and one sister in Wales. Funeral arrangements were taken care of by the Canadian Legion. The funeral was held Thursday.
Firemen say it was one of the worst fires they have had for
some time. The cold weather hampered them and the spray from the hoses covered the firemen with ice.
Mrs. James Porter opened her house to the firefighters and served them coffee and dry socks. Mrs. Porter stated that "I had to chop off their helmets and mitts so the firemen could get warm."
Fireman Horbeck was injured while attempting to remove the metal roof off the cabin, he was taken to the General Hospital for treatment.
