Northern Cemeteries and Graves

A Guide to Skagway, Alaska

The Skagway Cemetery, Alaska

by Murray Lundberg

The Skagway Cemetery, Alaska
The Skagway Cemetery, which is currently in use, is located at Mile 0.6 of the Dyea Road. The first burial at the cemetery was that of 3-year-old Judeen Kay Simonsen, on August 14th, 1971. The other two cemeteries in Skagway are the Gold Rush Cemetery, used from 1898 until 1908, and the Pioneer Cemetery, used from 1908 until 1974.

We have posted a hi-resolution (6.8 MB) map of the Skagway Cemetery that was obtained from the City in October 2017.

All of the monuments and graves as of September 25, 2017, have been photographed and posted here:

"Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church in Skagway on Tues., May 4, for George Alexander Barry, who died at his home in Skagway on May 30, after a lingering illness. The service was conducted by Rev. Winn Taylor, Anglican minister from Whitehorse, with Scripture reading by Rev. Lee Vermont, pastor of the Skagway church.
Mr. Barry was born on July 14, 1916, in Maitland, Nova Scotia, and lived there until he came to the Yukon in April of 1937, and began working almost immediately for the White Pass & Yukon Railway as a Section hand at Bennett. George spent the rest of his life at WP&YR, working up to Relief Foreman at Carcross in 1941, Section Foreman at Whitehorse in 1946, and he became Track Superintendent in 1950, a position he held until his death. In 1940(?) he married Dorothy McKay, a ceremony held in the Anglican church at Carcross. The Barrys had five children, sons Donald and Kurt of Skagway, and daughters Judy Fairbanks and Joanne Hamme of Skagway, and Karen Sawyer of Juneau. The family moved to Skagway in 1955, and have been much-loved members of the Skagway community ever since.
Pallbearers were: Oscar Selmer, J.D. True, Carlton Brown, Dennis Lundy, Malcolm Moe of Skagway, and Gene Clever of Whitehorse. Organist was Mrs. Edna Kluting, and Rev. and Mrs. Gil Meroney sang 'In the Sweet By and Bye'. Interment was in the Skagway cemetery."

He worked on the Army's tugboat "Fornance", then moved to Skagway, where he live for fifty years, working for WP&YR for over 40 of those years. He married Gertrude Mulvihill of Skagway, and they raised five children. Following his retirement, Bill has visited his kids in the winters, and spent his summers at his vacation home in Tenakee.
Bill is survived by his sons Donald, of Anchorage, Gordon, of San Diego, Calif., and Jim of Redmond, Washington, and daughters Beverly Feero of Skagway, and Barbara Fairbanks, of Skagway. There are 15 grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
