So this is Global Warming – or Climate Change – or whatever. Yesterday afternoon we got the heaviest hail I’ve ever seen in this country, and this morning the temperature is -5°C (23°F), everything is glazed with ice and the last of my flowers have been killed. I’m very sad :( ….

  1. Oh Murray, that’s so disheartening about your plants! We didn’t get the hail at our place but I did have a touch of frost the other night and some of my potato plants didn’t like it one bit, in spite of me covering them up the night before. Gardening in the North certainly is a blood sport, isn’t it?

With another $100 thrown away this year, we’re thinking that maybe plastic flowers are a better idea – or just rely on Mother Nature to keep doing her magic.

  3. I honestly think my heart just broke!!!! I may even shed a tear!!!!!!!

  4. Wow, I only got rain out here, but it was chilly! That’s why I don’t garden or fish… so much easier just to buy the damned things!

We were out on the lake when the wind, rain, and then hail hit! Our (plastic & silk) flowers are still thriving, albeit needing to be stood up again. We have seen fresh snow on the mountain tops, but it melts within a day. It’s a beautiful day, today.

  6. If it makes you feel any better, I was on the 24 hours of light circuit in a t-shirt and shorts when I was hit by that hail storm.

I yelled out to the girl in front of me that it felt like my entire body was getting a tattoo. Luckily the ice water helped to numb the stinging. Brrrrr!!!

A friend in New Zealand just sent me some information about a May 11 storm at Mt. Maunganui NZ that makes this weather look very mild. The hailstones, many half the size of a golf ball, were 10cm deep and there were even tornadoes touching down during the crazy day ( http://www.nzherald.co.nz/mt-maunganui/news/article.cfm?l_id=253&objectid=10571661 ). The weather when Cathy and I were in Mt. Maunganui in February 2008 was wild but nothing like that! ( http://www.explorenorthtours.com/nz/images/maunganui-1122.html )

That was heavy hail! We see hail often here. Mostly it’s pea sized, but I have seen it as big as a golfball. It can certainly damage a car (and plants, windows, people, etc.).
