I have a piece of scrimshaw with three sailing ships with the name(s) --The Whaler Delta, Greenpoint, and Fogos carved above the whaling harbor scene dated 1842, giving the captain's name as Thomas Calder and the first mate as Joseph Bayle. The initial JA is also on the front. I am interested in knowing any details about the ships, location, people, etc that you might have. Can you help or suggest another source of information? Thank you.

I have a piece of scrimshaw that has been in my family for generations, but I don't know if its authentic. It states the name Alonzo O'Herendeen, Bark Falcon, October 26 1875- April 21,
1879. Pacific. Can you help me confirm if such a ship ever sailed? If there was
ever a Captain O'Herendeen?

Your scrimshaw appears to be authentic. The Falcon was a 285-ton bark owned by Thomas Knowles & Company. On October 26, 1875, she sailed from New Bedford, headed for the Pacific Ocean in command of Captain Alonzo O. Herendeen. When my report was finalized in October 1877, she was still at sea, but had already taken 450 sperm whales.
I am trying to find out more info about a relative who worked on a whaling ship in the South Pacific. My parents have a whales tooth that has 3-4 lines of scrimshaw which includes statements like " presented by the crew to ( B.F. or R.F. ) Reed " " taken in south pacific 1839". There is no ship name or the reason that the crew would present this to my relative. I would like to find out all I can. Please, if you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

My searching capability for people is still quite limited - although I have a very good index of whaling captains sailing from American ports prior to 1877. The most likely reason for such a presentation would be that the tooth is from the first whale taken during the voyage, presented to the captain. However, I have no captains named Reed sailing from any American port for the South Pacific in the 1836-1839 period.
