Great Britain is an island country in northwestern Europe. lt ranks 68th in size among the countries of the world and has less than 2% of the world's people. Yet for hundreds of years, Great Britain has been one of the world's most influential countries. During the 1700s, the British entered the Industrial Revolution and made Britain the world's richest manufacturing country. In addition. the British ruled the seas and were the world's greatest traders. By 1900, they had built an empire that covered about a fourth of the world's land and included almost a fourth of its people. The British have since lost their huge empire, but today the United Kingdom is still a leading industrial and trading nation, and a major world power.
