First Day Covers from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Series, 1977
Queen Elizabeth II 1977 Silver Jubilee postage stamps
Scattered over a million square miles of the Pacific Ocean are the atolls and coral islands comprising the Gilbert Islands. British navigators explored the islands during the eighteenth century. Among them was Thomas Gilbert for whom the islands were named. Formation of these islands into a British colony was a gradual process, beginning in 1915. Colonization was completed in 1937 with the inclusion of the Phoenix Islands. The colony became self-governing in 1971 and is now administered by the British High Commission for the Western Pacific.
