First Day Covers from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Series, 1977
Queen Elizabeth II 1977 Silver Jubilee postage stamps
Elizabeth II is Queen and Head of State of Fiji, an independent nation made up of over 300 islands in the South Pacific. Settled thousands of years ago by Melanesians probably migrating from Indonesia. Fiji was finally unified in 1871 under the great Chief Cakobau. To preserve its way of life and to help insulate the country from outside interference, Cakobau repeated an earlier offer to Queen Victoria, asking Britain to accept sovereignty over Fiji. Becoming by its own wish a Crown Colony in 1874, Fiji would again become independent in 1970 at its own request, while maintaining allegiance to the Queen, and membership in the Commonwealth of Nations.
Fiji's First Day Cover in tribute to its Queen's Silver Jubilee was issued at Suva, the capital and major port of the nation.
