Queen Elizabeth II 1977 Silver Jubilee postage stamps
Australia, the only continent which is also a country, lies entirely south of the equator, leading to the often-used phrase "down under" to describe its location. Although the Queen of Britain is also the Queen of Australia, this nation. comprised of six states, is wholly independent. The governor-general exercises the functions of the Queen, and individual governors of the states exercise powers that are not granted the federal government by the constitution.
On February 2. 1977, Australia honoured Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her twenty-fifth year of reign by issuing this First Day Cover postmarked in Melbourne, a major city and seaport.
