First Day Covers from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Series, 1977

Antigua

Queen Elizabeth II 1977 Silver Jubilee postage stamps

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, Antigua was named for a Spanish church in Seville. Unsuccessful Spanish and French settlements on the island were followed by a fruitful British effort in 1632, when sugarcane was introduced. After a brief occupation in 1666, Antigua passed permanently to Britain.

This Silver Jubilee First Day Cover was postmarked on February 7, 1977, at Antigua's thriving tourist city and capital, St. John's.
