First Day Covers from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Series, 1977
Queen Elizabeth II 1977 Silver Jubilee postage stamps
Nestled among several sovereign states that hold Queen Elizabeth II to be head of state is Anguilla, an island of the Lesser Antilles in the West Indies. Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1493; its name derives from anguille, "eel" in French, to note its long, thin shape. Sixteen miles long and 3&rac12; miles wide at maximum, it guards the southerly extreme of the Anegada Passage, one of two similar passages through which much of the waters of the Atlantic Ocean flow to the Caribbean SEa.
Anguilla honoured the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth's accession to the throne with the release of a First Day Cover on February 9, 1977.
